Thomas Jefferson University Hospital maintains a Cancer Registry to track all newly diagnosed cancer patient information. The Oncology Data Services Department (Cancer Registry) of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) provides vital and mandatory services to TJHU and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR) requires the reporting of all patients diagnosed and/or treated for carcinoma within six months of diagnosis. Data are also submitted to the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) annually, allowing comparative analysis with other hospitals for studies and educational purposes. Selective data are sent from the NCDB to the American Cancer Society Web site for public viewing.

The data compiled on each patient includes demographics, medical history, methods of diagnosis, types of treatment administered, stage of disease and lifetime follow-up. These data directly benefit patients and caregivers by providing the basis for outcomes analyses.

The Oncology Data Services Department operates under established standards from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, www.facs.org. The hospital is required to meet these standards to be an American College of Surgeons-approved cancer program.

Cancer Registrars possess the clinical and technical knowledge and skills necessary to maintain components of the disease-related data collection systems consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and accreditation requirements of the health care delivery system. TJUH’s Oncology Data Services Staff are certified professionals in cancer registry data management. It is imperative that we continually update our professional skills to meet the challenge of reporting quality data statistics.
